Searching for ancestor, sibling, descendant and slave owner information on Hester NICHOLSON-BROWN, b. 1845, d. 1919. Hester'S marriage certificate, dated 1/24/1868, indicates her parents to be Washington BROWN (deceased at the time of marriage) and Ora (Ary) NICHOLSON. HESTER married Alfred HARRIS. Their children are: Marion (Maryland), Claiborn, William, Emma, Frank, Alfred Jr., Cornes, Jack, Sally and Hattie. Have information on Marion and Alfred Jr.'s lineages; however the other children have proven difficult to trace.

HARRIS posted by Celeste Marshall on Monday, March 2, 1998

Searching for ancestor, sibling, descendant and slave owner information on Harriet HARRIS. Only known information about Harriet was obtained from her son's marriage certificate (dated 1/24/1868), Alfred HARRIS, who was a slave to James Young HARRIS. It is possible that Harriet was a slave of James as well, but do not have the data to prove or disprove this theory. Interestingly, on Alfred's death certificate (1936) there is a Harriet HARRIS indicated as the informant. Perhaps this Harriet is a granddaughter named for her grandmother?

Searching for ancestor, sibling, descendant and slave owner information on Washington BROWN. The only data I have on Washington BROWN is that he is identified as the father of Hester NICHOLSON on her marriage certificate, dated 1/24/1868. The certificate also reflects that he was deceased at the time of her marriage.

LANGFORD, LANKFORD, PAYNE posted by NKF007@aol.com on Monday, March 2, 1998

I am seeking information on the LANGFORD aka LANKFORD family. The 1880 census has a William LANGFORD aged 73 yrs., his wife Ann aged 50,Thomas aged 18 yrs, Willie K. aged 11 and Annie aged 7 yrs. Ann's maiden name was possibly PAYNE. It has been said that William was a Confederate soldier but so far this has not been confirmed. He may have been a freed slave. Could anyone suggest where I might find out if there were any slave owners by the name of LANKFORD in that area of North Carolina ? If anyone knows more about this family or might be able to suggest some recommended reading I would love to hear from them.

ADAMS, BALL, BARKER, BRUMMITT, CLARK, HALL, HARRIS, WADE, WILLIAMS, WILSON posted by Barbara Elliott on Tuesday, March 17, 1998

Do you have anything on Robert HARRIS who married Martha CLARK 12 Nov. 1842 in Warren Co., NC.

Who were the parents of Robert Harris and who were the parents of Martha Clark? Where is Martha Clark Harris Burried?

Their Children are:
1. James Thomas Harris, born April 21, 1845, married 1880, Lucy W. BALL. James Thomas Harris died August 7, 1911 and is Buried at Harris's Chapel United Methodist Church in Vance Co., NC.
2. Mary E. Harris, born abt 1847, married December 28, 1867 in Granville Co., NC Nathaniel ADAMS --divorced and at the time of her Fathers will she was Mary E. WILSON (name of second husband is unknown--but would love to know his name).
3. John A. Harris, born Apr 10, 1849, married Mary Elizabeth, died December 31, 1914 and is also Buried at Harris's Chapel UM Church in Vance County.
4. George Robertson Harris, born abt 1852--nothing else is know about him. He was in the will of his Father.

Robert Harris died Dec. 28, 1889 in Vance County He married 2nd Martha ADAMS Dec. 222. 1859 in Granville Co., NC. They both are buried at Harris's UM Church in Vance Co., NC. There are seven children born to the 2nd marriage.
(1) Edward W. Harris, born March 11, 1861, married Meta Earl BRUMMITT.
(2) Joseph N. Harris, born 1863, married Lula M. BARKER.
(3) Benjamin Franklin Harris, born Jan 18, 1867, married Alice CLARK.
(4) Lucy Virginia (Jennie) Harris, born July 7, 1869, married William Henderson WADE, Jr.
(5) Pattie D. Harris, born Nov. 15, 1871, married Henry Tommy WILLIAMS.
(6) Vitula Hummitt Harris, born July 5, 1875, married Otis Henry HALL (This is my Grandmother).
(7) Mittie Kate Harris, married Edward Lee WADE

The 1860 census has Robert Harris living in Henderson, NC. Later on he bought a farm jointly with his son Benjamin Franklin Harris in the Watkins Community of Vance Co. Most of the 2nd family is buried at Harris's Chapel or Herman Methodist Church in Vance Co. Edward W. Harris is buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Henderson, N. C (Some confusion here as the 1870 census has him as Rufus E. Harris). Joseph N. Harris is buried in or near Portsmouth, Va. as that is where he lived most of his life.

I am at a wall for the parents of Robert Harris and both of his wifes. Family members were never interested in Genealogy as Grandfather and Grandmother either were dead or died when they were only 6-8 years old.

All help appreciated on this family. Barbara Bullock Elliott
